Bremer Bay February 2025

Ioana, 29 March 202629 March 2026

We had heard that the sightseeing cruises to see the orcas off Bremer Bay can be quite spectacular so we decided to go.

We drove from Perth to Bremer Bay. We stopped in Bunbury for lunch at Market Eating House then drove a bit further to Busselton, where we stopped for the next two nights. We stayed at Bayview Geographe Resort – a favourite place for us to stay as it’s a good balance of comfort / cleanliness and location right next to the beach. We visited some old favourites in the area and discovered some new places as well.

Busselton Jetty is always a nice relaxing walk and there’s always something pretty to see.

We spent a full day around Margaret River. We had breakfast at Goanna Bush cafe, then went to the Discover Deadly museum. We were pleased to see that Simmo’s make the same good quality ice cream. We visited Ngilgi Cave, then drove to Olio Bello, walked through / visited the shops in Margaret River and ended the day with a trip to Yallingup Bakery before getting some dinner supplies from the Farmers Market in Vasse to enjoy on the beach while watching the sunset.

The first stop after living Busselton was Ilma restaurant where we went for breakfast and got treated to the turquoise shades of Bunker Bay. From there we went to Naturaliste Lighthouse and walked around, then to Venison Farm to get some supplies. Next stop was Hamelin Bay to watch the stingrays and eagle rays before thee longer drive towards Walpole, where we stayed with friends.

then went to Handasydes strawberry farm to enjoy their berry delicacies before continuing our drive to Bremer Bay. There had been a bushfire in that area only days before we drove through, we could still smell the smoke and the charred trees and bushees were clearly visible.

We stayed at Bremer Bay Caravan Park and enjoyed dinner at Bremer Bay resort.

Finally the day to meet the orcas. We had a quick, light breakfast in the cottage before heading to the boat ramp for the orca watching cruise with Naturaliste charters. There was another charter that left just before us and both boats had quite a few people on board.

Not long after we left the mainland, we saw a large pod of bottle nose dolphins enjoying our wake. Some cruised right up to the back of the boat, close enough that we could make out the scratches and notches on some of them.

We saw quite a few birds on the way as well – shearwaters, wandering albatross – and, as the guides told us, their presence is usually a good sign that something exciting happening in the water. Sure enough orca fins popped up amongst the birds. The guides had names for all of them and knew the families / pods well. One of the pods had a couple of calves.

We came across a sunfish which is not always good news for boaties, but luckily we were far enough to only admire it. The guides told us that they’d seen quite a few sunfish in the area lately. We also saw a hammerhead, apparently an unusual visitor in this area.

On the way back we drove past Glasse to see the sea lions. One of them once keeping watch on top of the rocks.
