Alex T. Brown Shipwreck: A Forgotten Wreck off Yanchep

Ioana, 1 august 20261 august 2026

A beach north of Yanchep is the resting place of the Alex T. Brown, a vessel that met its end on the Western Australian coast in 1917. Little remains of the wreck today. In the years following the wrecking, some of its timber was legally salvaged and reused in local buildings including the Yanchep Inn. Some was taken later on, after storms exposed the wreck to souvenir hunters.

Today the wreck is buried in the sand most of the time. But it occasionally reappeares, after powerful winter storms like the one we had a few weeks ago.

We visited the wreck on a nice winter day. Other locals were also making the most of the sunshine.
